West Forest Elementary students kicked off Red Ribbon Week with Stone Soup and Homemade Bread. Stone Soup is a European folk story in which hungry strangers convince the people of a town to each share a small amount of their food in order to make a meal. Some of the vegetables for our soup came from our school garden that was planted by the students on Fun Day last spring. Plus, many students brought in a can of vegetables to make our soup even better. Our cafeteria ladies also contributed. The 6th grade class has been learning about Pennsylvania history and heritage, and that Pennsylvania was called the “Bread Basket” of the 13 colonies. They learned about the process of wheat being made into flour to make homemade bread, so with the help of their teacher, Mrs. Leann Sharrar, they decided to make bread for each elementary student to enjoy with their cup of soup. It was a great kickoff to a wonderful week of fun and learning!
