Forest Area students were able to participate in a summer enrichment program in STEM areas during the second week of June, thanks to a TANF grant. Three classroom teachers presented lessons on archaeology and paleontology for eleven students. They studied the Triassic, Jurassic and Cretaceous periods, conducted experiments and created dinosaur dioramas. With the loan of actual artifacts from the Carnegie Museum of Natural History, they were able to hold and feel fossils of plants, bones, and fauna from the three time periods. On the last day of the program, the group traveled south to visit the Cathedral of Learning at the University of Pittsburgh where they heard a short lecture from an archaeologist professor. Next, they visited some of the exhibits at the Carnegie Museum of Natural History and the Carnegie Science Center. They finished the trip with dinner and some play time at a fun park on the way home.
