Mrs. Preisel’s 5th grade Social Studies class at East Forest has been studying Canada as part of their World Studies curriculum. One of the concepts was the Native American cultures there, specifically the Inuits. Totem poles are still a major tradition with the Inuit community. The students learned that they were originally carved from red cedar, which is abundant in the Northwest. Some examples of the different types of totem poles that the Inuits design are: Welcome, Family, Shame or Memorial. Each student chose a theme and designed a totem pole that connected with his/her own story. Shown here are: (left to right, front) Jackson Sekera, Addison Spence; (back row) Sophia Stubbs, Kyleah Best, Cheyenne Grantz, Emma DeLay, Peyton Wonderling, Kay Zeigler.
