After reading an article regarding the impact of social media on the mental health of teenagers, students in Ms. Blair’s English 10 and English Lit classes were challenged to a “Phone Free Friday”. When the students in 7th and 9th grade found out about the challenge, they also wanted to participate. Students that decided to participate dropped off their phones at 8:00 am and were able to pick them up at the end of the school day. Students said it was more difficult than they expected. Several students said they kept checking their pockets to look for their phones. One student said she took the opportunity to learn more about her classmates. Another student thought not having his phone made him more productive. Over twenty-five students participated in the challenge. The students would like to do another “Phone Free Friday” and challenge everyone in the school to do it.
